Biography

Yi Wang is a New York-based pianist, educator, and collaborative artist whose work bridges performance, scholarship, and music education. Originally from Qingdao, China, she is dedicated to expanding the classical repertoire and fostering meaningful musical experiences for audiences and students alike.

Yi earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa and previously completed graduate studies at the Manhattan School of Music under the guidance of Dr. Inesa Sinkevych. Her artistic interests include solo piano performance, collaborative piano, music education, and the exploration of underrepresented voices in classical music.

As a performer, Yi has appeared in venues throughout the United States and China, including Carnegie Hall. She has received recognition in several international competitions, including the American Virtuoso International Music Competition and the New York Classical Music Competition. Her performances reflect a commitment to both artistic excellence and thoughtful programming, ranging from traditional masterworks to contemporary and lesser-known repertoire.

Yi is also the creator of Breaking My Silence, a doctoral recording project exploring the music of five influential women composers: Ethel Smyth, Henriëtte Bosmans, Jennifer Higdon, Eve Beglarian, and Annea Lockwood. Through performance, research, and advocacy, the project seeks to bring greater visibility to voices that have often been overlooked in classical music history.

With more than fifteen years of teaching experience, Yi has guided students of all ages and levels in developing technical excellence, artistic confidence, and independent musical thinking. Her students have been accepted into prestigious programs, including the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division, and have earned recognition in national and international competitions. Known for her engaging and encouraging teaching style, she strives to cultivate curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for music.
